What Is AFRIWESTERNISM ?
Afriwesternism is a cultural and intellectual framework and philosophy that seeks to harmonize African and Western worldviews - without diluting either. It is not about choosing one over the other; but, it is about weaving both into a cohesive and evolving identity. Think of it as a bridge between ancestral wisdom and modern insight. This is where Psychology, Education, Culture, Spirituality, Technologies and Methodologies from both African and Western worldviews meet.
Afriwesternism, as both a structured system (framework) and a worldview (philosophy), provides the guiding principles and beliefs that shape the business model of VMC Consultancy (PTY) Ltd and its initiatives. It is embedded in the company's DNA. Accordingly, our purpose, values, beliefs and actions - including the way we engage with our partners, clients and the broader world - are aligned with the ethos of Afriwesternism. We do not just adopt Afriwesternism in theory but we live it out in practice. It is not only about internal operations but also about external relationships and global positioning. It is the ethical compass that ensures consistency between what we believe and how we behave.
The term 'Afriwesternism' was coined by VMC Consultancy Founder and Director. As an author, she coined the term and explained it in her book titled Born Into A Secret Society.
Why it Matters?
Afriwesternism responds to the historical tensions caused by Westernization, which often marginalized African knowledge systems. It's a form of cultural reclamation and innovation - especially relevant in post-colonial societies where identity is complex and layered. It acknowledges that in this era, moving forward, belief systems and practices are interwoven and intertwined. It promotes blended worldviews.
